We will ensure that all aspects of food and nutrition in school promote the health and well being of children and staff. Readership - This document is intended for - All teaching staff, including supply teachers School Governors Parents Nursery Nurses and support staff Introduction - At Foley, we are currently working towards National Healthy Schools Status. Through effective leadership, the school ethos and the curriculum, all school staff can bring together the elements within a school day to create and environment which supports a healthy lifestyle. Objectives - To ensure that we are giving consistent messages to the children about food and health To give the children the information they need so they can make healthy food choices in and out of the school environment To promote health awareness To encourage all children to take part in the national 5 a day strategy To encourage all children to drink water throughout the day To promote the opportunity to parents to purchase milk To contribute to the healthy physical development of all members of our school community Eating Environment - At Foley, we have a separate dining hall which is a great bonus. This environment is pleasant with plenty of light and looks out onto the playground. The children sit at brightly coloured tables and benches for both school meals and packed lunches. When the weather is good, those children with packed lunches are taken for a  picnic with the lunchtime supervisors. School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme - All children are entitled to a piece of fruit or a vegetable snack each day. These are most often eaten at first playtime. No other snack is allowed for playtimes. Mrs. Jones is our School Fruit Coordinator. School meals and packed lunches - The school meals are provided by Staffordshire Catering Service (The Lunch Bunch) and are freshly cooked on site every day. The children have an excellent choice which always includes fresh fruit and vegetable options. The menus are carefully balanced and are created using stringent nutritional guidelines. Children can bring packed lunches to school. As a healthy school, we do not allow chocolate, sweets or fizzy drinks to be in packed lunches. Water for all - At present, there are 3 water fountains in the school building providing everyone access to drinking water. Children are also encouraged to bring drinks from home - preferably water. We have arranged for 2 new water coolers to be installed to replace the existing fountains. All the children will have a named sports cap water bottle which they can fill from the water coolers during the day. Food Across the Curriculum - In the Foundation Stage and during Key Stage One there are a number of opportunities for children to develop knowledge and understanding of health and food - through shopping, preparing and cooking food. In Literacy, there are opportunities for the children to read non-fiction books about health and food, write and follow recipes and create menus. In Maths, there are opportunities for the children to calculate weights and measures whilst preparing food In Science, there are opportunities for the children to learn about types of food available and their functions within the human body. They learn about how foods are used to make other foods. In ICT, there are opportunities for children to carry out research about different foods and healthy lifestyles using the internet and Espresso. The children use digital cameras to record any experiences they have with food. In DT, there are opportunities for the children to handle, discuss, sort and prepare fruit and vegetables. They also design a food product using the preparation skills. In RE, there are opportunities for the children to learn how food is an important part of different religious festivals. In PE, there are opportunities for the children to learn how their bodies feel before, during and after exercising. They learn about the foods that give them energy. During Golden Time there are opportunities for the children to take part in cooking and to know how to grow certain edible plants and where the food they eat comes from.
